The Speed Art Museum is pairing contemporary art with a DJ set, drinks, and a dance floor for a new after-hours event.
The Louisville museum will host Speed Social: The Night Shift from 6-9 p.m. Friday, Oct. 23, with local DJ Coop le Moderne providing the soundtrack. The evening will combine experimental film and other moving-image works with space to dance or settle into a lounge area.
Presented in partnership with the Sam Gilliam Visiting Artist Program, the event will take place beneath Eric N. Mack’s “RARE ESSENCE,” an installation of suspended textile paintings in the museum’s Gheens Court.
Mack’s work brings together fabrics that are sheer, painted, dyed, patterned, and worn, creating an overhead canopy that catches and filters the light. The installation, which opened in May, remains on view through Nov. 29.
For the evening, the focus is on music, film, and hanging out rather than touring the museum. Admission does not include gallery access. A cash bar will offer alcoholic and nonalcoholic drinks, and the event is open to adults 18 and older.
